A Lincoln County grand jury this week indicted a man in the February killing of his 77-year-old grandmother in Denver.
Investigators said Chadwick Allen Bean, 40, of Morganton, was their prime suspect in the stabbing death of Lucille Miller Punch early on, but they had to put together enough evidence to charge him.
Bean is scheduled to be transferred to Lincoln County from the N.C. Department of Corrections, where he is serving time for a probation violation.
Bean will then have his first appearance in Lincoln County District Court.
Deputies responded to Punch’s home in the 400 block of Beth Haven Church Road on Feb. 22, after her son-in-law found her dead of multiple stab wounds.
The son-in-law had gone to the home to carry out Punch’s trash and noticed the sliding glass door open, sheriff’s investigators said. He went inside, found Punch lying on a hospital-style bed and called 911.
The killing is the only one in Lincoln County this year, the sheriff’s office said.
