911 dispatchers listened as man in Ballantyne shot multiple times and killed, cops say
A 43-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed in Ballantyne early Saturday as dispatchers answering a 911 call heard gunfire and people arguing, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.
William Johnston was shot about 6:45 a.m. in the 15000 block of Capricorn Lane and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police news release. Capricorn Lane is off Providence Road West and Old Ardrey Kell Road.
Johnston was Charlotte’s 106th homicide victim of 2019.
As the shooting unfolded, a dispatcher told a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer that 911 had received calls about two shootings in the area, according to radio traffic obtained by the Observer from Broadcastify.
“We’re getting calls on another subject who was shot in the area, Capricorn Lane,” the dispatcher tells the officer. “Caller saying her father was shot. Medic is 17 (en route). 911’s advising they heard shots fired in the background when they were talking.”
CMPD has released no information about a possible other shooting in Ballantyne. Police also haven’t said if they have a suspect in Johnston’s killing.
