1 dead, 1 hurt after gunfire erupts in Charlotte neighborhood, police say

A 20-year-old man was fatally shot and another person hurt after gunfire erupted in a Charlotte neighborhood Friday night, police said.

Police identified the victim as Brad Gregory Kelly. He was Charlotte’s fifth homicide victim this month.

Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene after Steele Creek Division officers responded to a “shots fired call” in the 200 block of Stone Post Road just after 8 p.m., according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. That’s off Nations Ford Road in southwest Charlotte.

Two minutes earlier, Steele Creek patrol officers found a male with a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the 700 block of Edgegreen Drive, about two miles from where Kelly was found. Paramedics took him to a hospital, police said. Edgegreen Drive also is off Nations Ford Road.

“At this time, the relationship between the two victims is unknown,” police said in the release. “Preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred on Stone Post Road.”

CMPD homicide detectives were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
