CMPD identifies 18-year-old they say was involved in South Charlotte ‘robbery spree’
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police released the name of the 18-year-old man who was arrested for his involvement in what officials have called a “robbery spree” in south Charlotte neighborhoods.
Police said Kadyn Kenty was the driver of the stolen vehicle used in a series of attempted robberies early Tuesday morning.
Kenty was charged with several crimes including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, attempted armed robbery, two counts of shooting into a occupied vehicle or dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a statement from CMPD.
The identity of a 17-year-old suspect, who police said was also involved in the robberies, was not released due to his age. The 17-year-old was also charged with several crimes including breaking and entering, armed robbery, felony larceny, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and shooting into an occupied vehicle or dwelling.
The string of robberies began around 4:35 a.m. Tuesday on Otter Creek Drive, off Ballantyne Commons Parkway in south Charlotte, CMPD officials said Tuesday.
As the Observer previously reported, a man told police officers that he’d confronted two suspects breaking into his wife’s vehicle.
Initially, police said, the two armed suspects drove away but “then circled back around and fired multiple rounds at the victim while he was sitting in his vehicle.” The man’s car was riddled by bullets but he was not injured, CMPD officials said.
About 15 minutes later, another 911 call came in. This one from Clems Branch Drive, which is about 3 miles away.
In that case, the Observer previously reported, two people “pulled behind an adult male victim’s vehicle” and one suspect with a gun got out wearing a mask, according to information from police.
The victim on Clems Branch Drive was armed and police say he fired at the suspect before the suspect left.
Officers began looking for a white Camry, which they believed by have been involved. About six minutes later, they spotted the suspect’s car but the driver did not stop, leading police on a chase. A “vehicle pursuit ensued” until the driver hit a tree on Bevington Place, police said.
Kenty, identified by CMPD as a convicted felon, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The car he was driving was reported stolen Jan. 29 near the 900 block of Carrington Drive in west Charlotte, officials say.
A short time later, officers got another attempted robbery and shooting call, near the 14500 block of Myers Mill Lane. As the Observer previously reported, “when they arrived, police say they found the 17-year-old with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.”
In a statement on Tuesday, CMPD officials say the 17-year-old is accused of taking a woman’s car keys at gunpoint and trying to steal her car. Her husband interfered, according to police. The man and the teen “began tussling” and neighbors rushed in to help.
CMPD officials say one neighbor shot the teen suspect after ordering him to drop his gun. Then, the neighbors “held down” the 17-year-old until officers arrived, the Observer previously reported.
