Mooresville man followed tailgating driver and was shot in road rage incident
Authorities are searching for a man who they say shot someone after a road rage incident turned violent in Mooresville on Sunday morning.
The shooting happened around 11:40 a.m. after the man began following a driver who had been tailgating him and threw something at his SUV, Iredell County authorities said.
Deputies found the man with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, according to a news release Monday. A 911 call came in about a shooting in the 700 block of Cornelius Road.
According to the sheriff’s office, one driver started tailgating another driver on Fern Hill Road. The tailgating continued onto Perth Road and then Judas Road until the driver accused in the shooting threw an object on the victim’s SUV.
Deputies say the victim then followed the other man to a driveway on Cornelius Road. The victim stopped his car, too, and “approached the other vehicle,” authorities said.
The driver of the other car had a handgun and shot the man before speeding away, the release states.
On Monday, deputies said the injured man had emergency surgery and is in “serious but stable condition.”
The sheriff’s office gave a description of the man and a car involved in the shooting.
Authorities said the suspect is a white man with brown hair and “slight facial hair,” who was wearing sunglasses with an orange reflective tint. His age was unclear with authorities describing him as “possibly in his 20’s to 50’s.”
Investigators say they believe he was driving a silver or gray car. Initially, on Tuesday, officials said the car was similar to a Nissan Sentra but on Wednesday the sheriff’s office said new video footage became available showing the car is likely a 2008 or newer Kia Forte.
An investigation is ongoing. Authorities ask that anyone with information call the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office at 704-878-3180.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include new information from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. A day after releasing information about the possible suspect vehicle, the sheriff’s office corrected the description of the car saying it appears to be a Kia Forte.
