Child shot while playing outside apartments in Charlotte, police say

An 11-year-old boy is recovering in a Charlotte hospital after being shot in the leg while he was playing outside an apartment on Sunday night, police say.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of apartments on Leake Street around 8:30 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a news statement late Sunday. The child, who was not identified by CMPD, was “playing in the parking lot of the Little Rock Apartments when he was shot,” the statement from police said.

No arrests had been made by late Sunday. CMPD officials said two unoccupied cars were struck by bullets in the parking lot.

Little Rock Apartments complex is located near the intersection of West Boulevard and Billy Graham Parkway.

The child who was injured was not targeted, according to police.

Further details about the shooting were not released Sunday. The shooting is under investigation and CMPD asked that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit charlottecrimestoppers.com to leave information anonymously.
