The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the death of a man inside the Mecklenburg County Jail.

A Charlotte man at the Mecklenburg County Jail was found unresponsive in a cell early Sunday and later died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detention Center employees and first responders attempted CPR on Michael Daniel Mangan, who was 51-years-old, after finding him unresponsive in his cell at 5:38 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a news statement. Mangan was pronounced dead nearly an hour later at 6:23 a.m., according to the statement.

The State Bureau of Investigation will investigate Mangan’s death, officials said.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office records show Mangan was arrested for felony larceny and entered the jail on Friday. Like others booked recently into the jail, Mangan was placed in a separate housing unit to screen for possible coronavirus symptoms, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office noted in a press release that Mangan did not appear to have any symptoms of coronavirus.

Sheriff Garry McFadden said the department was “devastated” by the loss.
