Police investigate Charlotte’s second homicide within 24 hours
Charlotte’s 58th homicide of the year and second homicide of the weekend took place Sunday afternoon in northeast Charlotte.
Just before 4 p.m., officials with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said detectives were investigating a fatal shooting in the 4000 block of Cushman Street near the Sugar Creek Community Park. Police said they responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at 3:04 p.m., according to a news statement.
A male victim was found with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital, according to police. The man, who was not identified by police late Sunday, died a short time after the shooting.
Initial findings from police indicate that the shooting took place at the intersection of Cushman Street and Ridgedale Circle. The man who was shot ran from the intersection to a nearby home, where he was found by officers, CMPD officials said.
No arrests had been made late Sunday. Police officers said they believe the shooter or shooters fled.
This is Charlotte’s 58th homicide of the year and the second fatal shooting of the weekend. Late Saturday, 52-year-old Allen Nugene Smith was fatally shot at the BP gas station near the intersection of East WT Harris and N. Sharon Amity Road, according to CMPD.
