CMPD looking for man who sexually assaulted woman near uptown park Sunday afternoon

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they are looking for the man who sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman on Sunday around 4:30 p.m. near Frazier Park.

On Monday, CMPD Sgt. Allison Rooks, who works in the sexual assault unit, said a woman took a mid-day walk through Frazier Park when the suspect struck up a brief conversation with her.

As the woman continued walking through the park, the man showed her a firearm and then demanded property, Rooks said. The victim complied and was forced a short distance where she was sexually assaulted, Rooks said.

Police said the incident took place in the 600 block of McNinch Street in Third Ward.

“This is extremely rare. Obviously one sexual assault is too many, but in this particular case, this is broad daylight on a Sunday in a public park,” Rooks said.

The case is also unusual since the assailant was a stranger to the victim and the park does not have many issues when it comes to crime, she said.

“Obviously, this is a huge red flag for some, but overall this is a safe area,” Rooks said.

Police said they are looking through surveillance footage from the area.

Police encourage anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 704-336-6052.
