A 22-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident in east Charlotte early Sunday morning, police said.

Officers found Cameron Cook “unconscious and in the roadway” when they arrived near the 1300 block of East Independence Boulevard around 3:40 a.m., according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

Cook had been walking in the right lane of inbound Independence Boulevard when he was hit by a vehicle at the Brookshire Boulevard and John Belk Freeway split, police said. After the crash, the unknown vehicle left the area, which CPMD described as “poorly lit.”

Police have not said if they have a suspect. They called their investigation “active and ongoing.”

Police ask anyone with information to call them at 704-432-8477 or anonymously on the Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600.

This is a developing story.
