911 call about gunfire leads police to dead woman sitting in vehicle, CMPD reports

A woman was found dead in a vehicle early Thursday after Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to calls about gunfire in a northeast Charlotte neighborhood, according to a press release.

Thursday afternoon, CMPD identified the victim as 32-year-old Beatrice Serrano. A suspect in the case was found at the scene, police said.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. Sept. 10 near the 3400 block of Denson Place, north of Shamrock Road, CMPD said.

“Officers located female victim in a car, deceased of a gunshot wound. They also discovered a male suspect and a witness in an altercation at an adjacent property,” the release said.

“The suspect sustained minor injuries from the altercation and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Preliminary information and evidence gathered indicates that the deceased victim and the suspect had a previous relationship.”

The suspect’s name was not released. Additional suspects are not being sought, police said.

The homicide is the 85th of the year in Charlotte and came only a few hours after a 5-year-old was shot and killed. This time last year — which was the deadliest year in a decade — there had been 69 homicides.

Tips in the case can be offered at 704-432-TIPS or by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
