Police have charged a 32-year-old man in the shooting death of De’Angelo Dante Dumas late Wednesday in an east Charlotte neighborhood off East Sugar Creek Road and The Plaza.
Khenti Asaru El of Charlotte was charged Friday with murder, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Police are not saying what they believe led to the shooting but said Dumas and El knew each other.
Police said they arrested El without incident on Friday afternoon. He was jailed without bail.
The shooting happened about 10:20 p.m. in the 1800 block of Finchley Drive, police said. Dumas, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.
El has trials pending on charges of felony possession of cocaine, misdemeanor possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor simple possession of a schedule III controlled substance, court records show.
He was found guilty in 2011 of felony possession of cocaine and felony sale of marijuana, records show. He was found guilty in 2008 of misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor communicating threats. In 2006, he was found guilty of felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, according to court records.
Dumas had trials pending on charges from January of felony possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana, court records show.
He was found guilty last year of felony possession of stolen goods and misdemeanor possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana, records show. He served no time in prison for those offenses but was still on probation when he died.
