Union County man suspected of shooting his way into gas station, stealing about $500 worth of lottery tickets

Jeffrey Bird, 27, has been arrested and charged with shooting his way into the College Food Mart in Wingate.

Bird pulled up to the gas station, which was closed and empty, around 2 a.m. Saturday morning and fired three rounds from his .38-caliber revolver into the door, according to Lt. Saverio Montecalvo of the Wingate Police Department.

Montecalvo said Bird jumped the counter and stole about $500 worth of lottery tickets. Bird was arrested about nine hours later.

Bird is currently being held on a $70,000 bond, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office website.
