Suspect charged in fiery car crash that killed Charlotte driver in February, CMPD says

An arrest warrant has been obtained in connection with a fiery, fatal crash on Sunday, Feb. 13, near Interstate 485 in northwest Charlotte, police said.

The driver was identified as Jamil Rout, 36, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. Investigators have not said what prompted the death to be classified a homicide.

CMPD obtained a warrant against Warren Capel, 34, on a murder charge, police said on Sept. 14. Capel is currently in Piedmont Correctional Institution on unrelated charges, police said.

Capel’s parole for 2007 second-degree murder and robbery convictions had ended days before the crash, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of Marita Drive, near the intersection of I-485 and Mount Holly Road, police said. The street parallels the I-485 exit ramp.

CMPD was initially called about “an accident with personal injury,” police said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they found a vehicle “that had veered off of the roadway and (was) on fire,” police said in the release.

“Officers were able to remove the driver from the vehicle and start lifesaving efforts before Medic arrived. Medic pronounced the driver deceased.”

The cause of death has not been released.
