1 person dead in shooting in southeast Charlotte, police say

A homicide investigation is underway after a person was found shot to death in a southeast Charlotte neighborhood Monday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened in the 3600 block of Marvin Road, near North Wendover Road, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. Timothy Mackey, 35, has been identified as the victim and 25-year-old Cedric Young is the alleged shooter, according to a CMPD news release.

Officers arrived in the Grier Heights community around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a call about an assault with a deadly weapon, according to CMPD. Police learned that bystanders had moved Mackey to a location “a short distance away,” CMPD said. Medic then took the him to a hospital where he later died.

Young was apprehended without incident on Tuesday and he is being charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, CMPD said.

There have been 17 homicides in 2022, including 14 by a handgun, firearm or rifle, CMPD data show.
