An 18-year-old woman was identified as the person killed in a shooting at an east Charlotte gas station on Thursday, police said.
Jayla Symone Barrett was wounded around 4 p.m. at a Shell gas station in the 10300 block of Albemarle Road, near Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill Police said in a news release on Friday.
The shooting happened during a physical altercation between Barnett and a female suspect, police said. Police did not identify the suspect because she’s a minor.
Detectives with Mint Hill Police will complete their investigation and submit the findings to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges are pursued.
Barrett’s family began a GoFundMe, which as of Tuesday, has raised over $1,100 dollars.
“I want to get justice for my sister,” Kyla Barrett wrote on her sister’s GoFundMe page. “Jayla loved to play basketball, work and take care of our mother. My sister loved and cared for everyone.”
Barrett’s sister described her as goofy, funny and someone she could never take seriously when joking.
“She was there for her family, friends in difficult times,” Kyla Barrett said. “Jayla will be remembered forever!”
