Child, 4 others hurt in shooting in west Charlotte, CMPD says
Five people were injured, including a child and another minor, in a shooting in west Charlotte on Monday afternoon, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded to gunfire and reports that people had been shot in a residential area off Beatties Ford Road, bordered by Gilbert Street, Newland Road and Holly Street. The shooting happened in the 2000 block of Holly Street, police said in a news release.
An adult and child with non-life threatening gunshots were found initially, the release said. The child had a “superficial graze wound” to the shoulder, police said.
Another adult and a juvenile were found nearby with non-life threatening gunshot wounds, police said.
Medic took all four people to a hospital, police said. A fifth person arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds also, CMPD Capt. Lucas Veith told reporters Monday.
The five individuals are known to each other, Veith said. An altercation led to multiple shots being fired, he said. More than one person is suspected to have fired a gun but Veith said it’s too early in the police investigation to determine who did.
A “large number” of rounds were fired, Veith said. He did not specify what type of weapons were used during the shooting.
“Any kind of shooting that happens, the threat is to all of the public, all of the neighborhood and it’s an extreme fear for us,” Veith said. “Anyone could become a victim, we never know where those rounds are going to go.”
