Have you seen this car? CMPD seeks help after 4-year-old boy hurt in drive-by shooting
Police on Wednesday released photos of an “extremely weathered car” whose driver is wanted in Monday’s drive-by shooting that injured a 4-year-old boy in Charlotte.
Officers found the child with a gunshot wound around 6:48 p.m. near the 7100 block of Wallace Road in southeast Charlotte, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.
That’s near the Wallace Woods Apartments just off Independence Boulevard. Police had responded to a 911 call for an assault with a deadly weapon near the address.
The child underwent surgery Monday night, police said. No updates have been provided about his condition as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.
Police Maj. David Robinson told reporters at the scene that the boy and his mother were on their way back from a grocery store when the drive-by shooting happened, according to Observer news partner WSOC.
According to a CMPD report, the bullet struck the outside of the mother’s apartment before hitting the boy.
Police said the shooter was driving a four-door sedan with extensive sun damage to the hood and trunk. The assailant pulled into a parking lot at 6:44 p.m. and shot into a building, police said.
The car also has damage to the driver-side door fender and back right passenger door, according to CMPD. The car has a sun roof and no tag displayed, police said.
Police didn’t release the make and model of the car.
After the shooting, the driver turned left onto Wallace Road toward Monroe Road, police said.
CMPD urges anyone who recognizes the car, or has information on its whereabouts or the whereabouts of the driver, to call the department at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
