Hickory 18-year-old indicted on death by vehicle, DWI charges

A Catawba County grand jury this week indicted 18-year-old David Arthur Engelmann of Hickory on charges of felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired.

Engelmann was charged in connection with an Aug. 31, 2014, crash that killed 17-year-old Hickory High classmate Jay Brian Robertson II.

A grand jury in May declined to indict Engelmann on the felony death by vehicle charge, but District Attorney David Learner brought the case back before the grand jury.

Engelmann was driving a Subaru Forester sport utility vehicle along Sixth Street Northwest in Hickory’s Viewmont community when he ran off the road, over-corrected and flipped the vehicle, prosecutors said. Robertson was ejected through the open sunroof.

Police said Engelmann’s blood alcohol level was .09. The legal limit for driving is .08.

“This is a very tragic case for all involved,” Learner said in announcing the indictments.
