Northlake Mall reopening Friday with increased police presence a day after double shooting
Northlake Mall said it is reopening Friday, a day after two people were shot at the northeast Charlotte shopping center.
The mall said it is up to each store to decide if it will reopen, but that it is contractually obliged to open. The mall opens at 10 a.m., and will be open to 9 p.m. as usual.
It closed early Thursday following the afternoon shooting.
An argument inside a store, near where the old Dick’s Sporting Goods is, led to a fight between two people, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. One of those people then pulled out a gun and shot the other person, according to police, who said a bystander also was shot.
A suspect was taken into custody, according to CMPD. An on-duty CMPD officer at the mall was able to locate the suspect and de-escalate the situation, CMPD said on Twitter.
One of the shooting victims was discharged from the hospital Thursday night, according to the mall. The second victim remains hospitalized.
Northlake Mall said in a statement that it will provide counselors “to ensure that employees know that they are both safe and cared for as they return to work.”
