Brother-in-law accused in Waxhaw shooting
A Waxhaw man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of his brother-in-law while the victim was asleep in bed Monday afternoon, Union County sheriff’s investigators said.
The victim, James Arnold Hunt, 41, ran to a neighbor’s home in the 3200 block of Collins Road and collapsed. He was shot in his face and lower back with a sawed-off shotgun and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte in critical condition, investigators said.
Hunt’s brother-in-law, Shannon Neil Painter, 31, was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
Investigators stopped Painter’s van as it drove across a field near the shooting, and Painter surrendered without incident. Painter also lives on Collins Road.
Investigators retrieved the shotgun in a creek bed about a mile from the shooting. Collins Road is off Waxhaw Highway.
The shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute, the sheriff’s office said.
Painter was jailed on $150,000 bail. His first court appearance is Aug. 11.
