Charlotte man shot, killed while trying to break into a home, police say

A man was shot dead during a home break-in in Gastonia Thursday night, police said.

A man in the home shot Frankie Carl Jones, 50, of Charlotte, at his front door — about three miles west of downtown Gastonia — at about 10:45 p.m., according to the the Gastonia Police Department.

The 911 caller said someone inside the home fired shots while a man tried to break in, according to police. Jones was also armed, police said an investigation showed.

Officers found Jones outside the home on the 2900 block of Crescent Lane, according to police. He’d been shot at least once, police said.

Jones later died at the hospital.

It is not clear if Jones fired his gun or if he knew the man inside the home.
