Memorial Day holiday weekend wrecks leave 3 dead in Charlotte, police say
Police are investigating three deadly crashes that happened over the Memorial Day weekend in Charlotte.
A 33-year-old woman died in a north Charlotte crash at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Whitney Kiera Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt, police said, when her Honda Accord crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Dodge Ram head-on. Toxicology reports have not yet been released for Johnson.
Officers found both cars with heavy front end damage near the intersection of Sunset Road and Beatties Ford Road, police said.
Paramedics said the Honda driver was dead at the scene. They took the Dodge’s 28-year-old driver and a front-seat passenger to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
In another deadly wreck, a 21-year-old man died in south Charlotte at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, according to CMPD. Police found Kevin Asael Mendoza in a 2011 Honda Accord that had crashed into a light pole on Carmel Road near Carmel Commons shopping mall.
Police said he seemed to have been speeding.
Most recently, at about 12:45 am Tuesday, a crash in south Charlotte left at least one person dead and shut down Tyvola Road between Londonberry Road and Flagstaff Drive, police said.
The crash happened along Tyvola Road near its intersection with South Boulevard, according to CMPD. By Tuesday morning, roads reopened, according to DriveNC.gov.
The identity of the crash victim has not been released yet.
