Bystanders helped police arrest the man they say punched a child on a busy, brewery-lined street in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood Sunday, June 4, 2023.

Police arrested a man accused of punching a 1-year-old child in the face in the middle of Charlotte’s South End neighborhood late Sunday morning.

The child’s mother said an “unknown man” hit her child near the intersection of West Summit Avenue and South Tryon Street, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

Officers quickly arrested Rico Limon Williams, 26, with help from witnesses and bystanders on West Summit Avenue — a busy, bar-lined street that houses Vana, Vinyl and Wooden Robot Brewery. Limon faces charges of assault on a child under 12, according to the new release.

Police are still investigating and have not said what caused the assault or if Limon knew the child or mother.
