1 dead in west Charlotte shooting

A 23-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday morning in the 2700 block of Botany Street, near LaSalle Street in west Charlotte, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they responded to the scene at 4:40 a.m. and found a man later identified as Jamarcus Devonne Walker behind a home and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medic pronounced Walker dead at the scene.

Police said they believe Walker was in a vehicle traveling on Botany Street when a person in a second vehicle pulled alongside and began shooting. The victim left his vehicle, ran behind the home and collapsed, police said.

Police were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses to the shooting, which happened a couple of blocks from West Charlotte High School.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) and speak with a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Walker was released from prison in March 2012 after serving seven months for felony breaking and entering, court records show. In 2013, he was found guilty of second-degree trespass and resisting a public officer.

He had trials pending on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, second-degree trespass, communicating threats and resisting a public officer, according to court records.
