Mecklenburg sheriff says some in jail had ‘brief illness,’ but won’t share details
Staff and health care providers at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central are monitoring the condition of some incarcerated people after they became ill late Saturday.
According to a sheriff’s office press release, a “limited number” of people jailed in the detention center experienced a “brief illness.”
On Monday, spokesperson Bradley Smith declined to provide the number of people impacted or say what symptoms they experienced.
However, he confirmed there haven’t been any more outbreaks and that peoples’ symptoms lasted overnight.
In the press release, Sheriff Garry McFadden said those affected do not require further medical attention, but he and jail medical provider Wellpath would closely monitor them.
Operations at the detention center “are continuing as usual” but staff have a heightened sense of awareness, especially with those who have reported being ill, the press release said.
“The well-being of our residents is a top priority,” McFadden said in a statement. “We are taking this situation seriously and are taking the steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone.”
