1-year-old boy in northeast Charlotte taken to hospital after being shot in leg
A 1-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he was shot in the leg early Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened in northeast Charlotte just after midnight, near the 700 block of Cricketwood Lane, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report.
The report said the boy was shot by an unknown suspect.
Cesar Castillo, a resident who lives on Cricketwood Lane, told the Observer he heard two gunshots at about 12:45 a.m. while taking a shower. By the time he went outside to check what happened, police and an ambulance were on the scene.
Castillo and his brother Kevin both said it’s not unusual to hear gunshots in the neighborhood, but it was shocking to hear them so close to their home this time.
“It’s really, really bad,” Kevin Castillo said about the victim being a 1-year-old boy. “I don’t why or how it happened, but it shouldn’t happen.”
Gregory Brown, another neighbor who lives near Cricketwood Lane, said it was “unbelievable” when he learned about the age of the victim. He said he was curious to know what was going on around 1 a.m. that would end up with a child being shot in the leg.
“People are careless with weapons,” Brown said.
Update: Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on April 19 announced the arrest of a man on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
