A vehicle that slammed into a CATS passenger bus at 1 a.m. was being driven by a fatally shot man who died behind the wheel, Charlotte investigators say.

The unusual crash occurred Wednesday, May 22, near the intersection of North Tryon Street and University City Boulevard, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle that had crashed into the rear of a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) passenger bus,” CMPD said in a news release.

“In the vehicle that crashed into the CATS bus, officers located a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. This victim was pronounced deceased on the scene by MEDIC.”

The driver was identified as 20-year-old Conner O’Neil Yancy, police said.

A “female passenger” was also found in the vehicle and taken to a hospital “with non-life-threatening injuries related” linked to the crash, police said. Her identity has not been released.

The bus had only a driver aboard at the time of the crash, officials said.

CMPD is investigating the case as a homicide.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CMPD’s Homicide Unit at 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a detective, officials said. Tips can also be offered anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com.
