Charlotte police send helicopter, dogs to chase teens in stolen car

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers Tuesday sent a helicopter and dogs to chase three teens in a car they say was stolen.

CMPD on X said the the teens were driving southwest of uptown Charlotte at about 10 a.m. Tuesday when a license plate reader identified the car as stolen.

“Officers did not pursue per CMPD policy, as the suspects had not committed a crime categorized as dangerous to life,” CMPD wrote.

But they did send up a helicopter.

As the teens crossed the North Carolina border into South Carolina’s York County, deputies followed the car for a short time before it re-entered Charlotte, according to police.

Near Charlotte’s Olympic High School on Williams Glenn Road, the teens “jumped and ran” from the car, CMPD said on X.

CMPD called multiple officers, including a K-9 unit, to set up a perimeter and detain one of the suspects. The high school was on a lockdown for more than an hour, from 10:45 a.m. to noon, said Justin Bachman, a spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

They did not find the other two teens but said there was “no indication of an active threat to the community.”
