CMPD takes person suffering mental health crisis at gas station near mall into custody
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said SWAT negotiators on Monday peacefully resolved a situation in which a person was having a mental health crisis inside a gas station near SouthPark Mall. He was taken to an ambulance.
The person was not injured, police said, and was handcuffed and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Officers with shields appeared to go into the gas station store to take the person outside.
The incident started around 7:30 a.m. at a Circle K on Sharon Road and lasted several hours.
The southbound lanes of Sharon Road and the westbound lanes of Fairview Road were closed earlier Monday, but roads were reopened by 11:40 a.m.
“At this time, it is believed the subject inside of the store is alone,” CMPD posted on X (formerly Twitter) while they were negotiating. “SWAT negotiators continue to work to de-escalate the situation to bring about a successful and safe resolution.”
Police negotiators could be heard speaking to the person, encouraging them to exit the gas station.
“If the door gets a little stuck, you might have to push it a little bit because the robot’s in front of it,” one of the negotiators could be heard saying.
