911 caller leads police to homicide near popular park in uptown Charlotte, CMPD says
The popular area around uptown Charlotte’s Romare Bearden Park was the scene of a late night killing, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
A 911 caller reported hearing the gunshots around 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in the 300 block of South Church Street, CMPD said in a news release. That’s the site of the park.
“Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound,” CMPD said. “MEDIC arrived on scene and transported the victim to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”
The identity of the victim has not been released and CMPD has not reported details of a suspect.
Romare Bearden Park is next to BB&T Ballpark and a block north of the Knight Theater and Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
News of the shooting comes about six weeks after an argument near the park put three people in the hospital with gunshot wounds, The Charlotte Observer reported in September. Five people, all of them adults, were listed as victims in the police report.
Other acts of violence near the park have included five people shot and wounded during a New Year’s Eve celebration, The Charlotte Observer has reported.
In early January, the Observer reported that some businesses were getting fed up with the violence around holidays and were closing their restaurants early or not opening at all during those times.
Anyone with information on the latest shooting is asked to call the CMPD Homicide Unit at 704-432-TIPS or contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
