An unidentified man ran away as a vehicle rolled backward into Lake Norman early Sunday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

A witness told investigators they saw the vehicle pull into the Beatty’s Ford access docks, then saw a man get out and run away as the 2019 Kia with California plates rolled into the lake around 1:30 a.m., according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The witness said they couldn’t tell whether there was anyone in the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said its dive team looked inside and outside the vehicle, but didn’t find anyone else.

The sheriff’s office pulled the vehicle from the lake and stored it at a lot, the news release said.
