33-year-old University City woman was pregnant when killed earlier this month, CMPD says
A 33-year-old University City woman was pregnant when a man killed her earlier this month, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Thursday.
Detectives from the department’s homicide unit learned last week Jameisha Wilkes was pregnant when she died on Nov. 13, a news release said. Officers from the University City division found her with a gunshot wound in the 5400 block of Strive Street after responding to a call. Wilkes was pronounced dead on the scene at the Ascent at Mallard Creek Apartments.
Dasean Maddox, 32, was identified as the suspect during the investigation. He was arrested in Cabarrus County and transported to the Law Enforcement Center in uptown.
Maddox confessed to a family member that he killed Wilkes, according to reporting by WSOC-TV, The Charlotte Observer’s news partner.
He was previously charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon, according to a Nov. 14 news release from the police department. CMPD’s news release on Thursday said the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office sent the case to grand jury with the additional charge of murder of an unborn child on Monday, but didn’t provide further information about the proceedings.
Maddox is still in custody after a judge previously denied his bond, according to WSOC-TV. He’s expected to make a court in December.
CMPD’s investigation in the case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective. Information may be sent anonymously by calling 704-334-1600 or visiting charlottecrimestoppers.com/
