Prosecutors drop domestic violence charge against ex-Charlotte Chamber CEO Bob Morgan
South Carolina prosecutors have dismissed a domestic violence charge against Bob Morgan, the former president and CEO of the Charlotte Chamber and the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, according to officials and court records.
Georgetown County sheriff deputies arrested Morgan Sept. 4 on allegations of hitting his wife on Pawleys Island, a sheriff’s office incident report showed.
The charge was dropped Nov. 26, records show. Prosecutors dropped the case at the victim’s request, according to an email to McClatchy from Tonya Root, spokesperson for the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The solicitor’s office handles prosecutions in Georgetown and Horry counties. Pawleys Island is between Myrtle Beach and Charleston.
Deputies said in September Morgan’s wife had injuries that included a black eye after she told officers Morgan hit her as many as five times, according to the incident report.
Morgan ran the Charlotte Chamber from 2005 until it merged with another group in 2018 to become the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, the Charlotte Observer reported at the time.
Morgan later served as CEO of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce from 2021 through June of this year, when he resigned.
Morgan had no previous criminal record, said William McIntosh of the Complete Legal Defense Team based in Myrtle Beach.
“Our client is very relieved to put this matter behind him, and allow for his family to heal,” McIntosh told McClatchy Monday in a telephone interview.
