CMPD makes second arrest following school bus hit by gunfire
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested two men after Monday’s school bus shooting.
Paris Lewis-Bynum, 20, was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
CMPD said Wednesday he was transferred to the custody of the sheriff’s office.
Police also arrested Lamarius Anthony, 21, on charges of felony cocaine possession, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun and possessing up to a half-ounce of marijuana, according to court records.
Anthony got a $9,000 unsecured bond and was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, according to court records and a jail spokesperson.
“The preliminary investigation shows that a school bus was caught in the crossfire between individuals in a dispute related to narcotics,” Charlotte police said in a Tuesday post on the social media site X. “The bus was not the intended target.”
Two students were treated for injuries from shattered glass, according to police.
Anthony has faced gun charges before. A grand jury in Mecklenburg recently indicted him on allegations of carrying a concealed gun in January. That indictment says he was convicted in district court of carrying a concealed gun another time, in December 2023.
Lewis-Bynum has a long list of charges that he either pleaded guilty to or that were dismissed dating back to 2021, according to court records. He was still in jail as of Thursday morning.
There were about 30 students on the bus when the shooting happened, CMS said in an email Monday.
“It is natural to feel anxious or frightened by incidents like this,” Albemarle Road Middle School Principal Toni Perry said in a Monday message to parents. “Our crisis counselors will be on campus tomorrow if students need support... The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our number one priority.”
