Charlotte warns residents about parking citation text message scam. What’s happening?
That Charlotte parking invoice you got may not be real.
The city sent a news release Monday warning residents about an ongoing scam related to the city’s on-street parking system.
Fraudulent text messages that look like they are from the city’s Park It program have been sent out, alerting people about their alleged outstanding parking invoice and asking them to make a payment via an external link, according to the release.
The city said these fraudulent messages should be ignored.
The city’s program will only use two methods for communicating about parking-related charges: the dreaded physical citation left on a vehicle’s windshield, and a letter delivered by the United States Postal Service if the physical citation goes unpaid. Charlotte does not ever send payment links via text, the release says.
People wanting to verify any outstanding parking citations and appeal or pay charges can check via Charlotte’s Park It web portal.
