One dead, two wounded by late night gunfire in University City area, CMPD says

A late night 911 call revealed three people were hit by gunfire along a busy stretch of University City Boulevard, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The wounds were fatal in the case of Wonah Abu-Baby Konte Jr., 35, CMPD said in an update.

It happened around 11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, in the 7800 block of University Boulevard, and investigators have not revealed a motive. The crime scene is just east of North Tryon Street.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Atrium Main and pronounced deceased,” CMPD said in a news release.

“Two additional subjects are being treated at Atrium Health University for gunshot wounds.”

Details of their condition have not been released.
