Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Thursday identified three officers who shot and hospitalized a man during a traffic stop along South Boulevard on Feb. 11.

The department also identified the man who was shot and charged.

CMPD officers Ryan Alberts, Ellis Wilcox, and Lucas Jayne shot Erik Lopez Hernandez, 21, a department press release said.

The officers shot Hernandez after they “perceived an imminent deadly threat” when making attempts to pull him over near the 7000 block of South Boulevard around 2 a.m., the department said. Police have not provided more information about why the officers perceived a threat.

Police shot Hernandez after he pulled over and got out, the department said.

A gun belonging to Hernandez was found at the scene, police said. No officers were injured.

All three were placed on paid leave pending an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Alberts and Wilcox started at CMPD on Oct. 25, 2021, the press release said, while Jayne started Jan. 17, 2023.

Hernandez has been released from the hospital and charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
