Police charge NC woman accused of trapping boyfriend in storage unit: ‘This is what you get’
A 52-year-old woman accused of locking her boyfriend inside a storage unit in Monroe during an argument was charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, a police press release said.
Robin Renae Deaton, who was arrested Thursday morning in Charlotte, allegedly slammed the storage unit’s door shut on the man on Feb. 20, saying, “This is what you get,” and leaving him stranded for about four days.
The man couldn’t find his phone because the storage unit, located at Cooper Storage, at 1950 Old Charlotte Highway, was a “hoarder’s paradise,” the Monroe Police Department press release said.
It wasn’t until Feb. 24 that the man managed to find his phone and was finally able to call 911.
“I’ve been locked in a storage unit for about a week now and I just now found my phone,” the man said in a recording of the 911 call. “My girlfriend locked me in here.”
He told a dispatcher Deaton used two locks on the unit and that the unit was in her name. He told the dispatcher which unit number he was in, and that his phone was low on battery.
Asked if he needed EMS as well, he said, “I just need out of here ... I just can’t breathe.”
Police freed the man and he was treated at a hospital for dehydration.
Deaton was released Thursday after posting a $40,000 secured bond, court records said.
