A 22-year-old Monroe woman was charged with killing her two cats by confining them in a room without water for over a week, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Amorette Smith was charged with two felony counts of killing animals by starvation and booked into the Union County Detention Center. She was released Saturday after posting a $5,000 secured bond.

The sheriff’s office and an arrest warrant said Smith shut the cats in a bedroom and didn’t check on them or give them water for a week and a half. Veterinary specialists confirmed the lack of care and water were a “significant factor” in causing their deaths, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies got involved after learning one of the cats died in Smith’s care and the other had to be euthanized because of its poor health.
