Mecklenburg sheriff releases app to search arrests, check for sex offenders

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has released a smartphone application that allows users to see who is booked in Charlotte’s jail, check a map of sex offenders and more.

Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement that it is “important to provide the public with a platform to communicate with us, to talk with us.”

Among the app’s features:

  • Users can look up arrests over the last three years, as well as people who have been booked into the county jail.

  • A tab explains how to begin the process of requesting a concealed handgun permit.

  • With a user’s location, a map shows nearby registered sex offenders.

  • One button allows users to apply for a job at the sheriff’s office. Others share contact information for the sheriff’s executive staff, internal affairs, funeral escorts, public information and more.

  • Users can sign up for push notifications about nearby emergencies, like special weather forecasts.

The sheriff’s office said thesheriffapp.com developed its app.

It is listed as “Mecklenburg Co Sheriffs Office” on the App Store and Google Play.
