Man struck, killed by vehicle on Park Road

A 64-year-old man died after a sport utility vehicle hit him as he crossed Park Road at Hamlin Park Drive in Charlotte early Saturday, police said.

Thomas Kirk Nelson was pronounced dead several hours later at Carolinas Medical Center.

Nelson was crossing in the 8600 block shortly after 2 a.m. when he was struck by an inbound 2003 Subaru Forester driven by Sergio Yobany Borrayo, police said.

Borrayo, 39, of Charlotte, was initially arrested and charged with driving while impaired. Police also charged him with involuntary manslaughter after Nelson died about 6:30 a.m.

The vehicle’s speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said. Borrayo was uninjured.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Detective Matthew Sammis at 704-336-8862 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
