A shot fired during a crowded youth sports event has been traced to the gun in a referee’s gym bag, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina.

The incident happened Saturday, May 3, at the Carolina Courts facility in Indian Trail, about a 15-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Investigators say the gun owner, 49-year-old Ernest Davis, has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

“Davis, who was working as a referee during youth sporting events, fired a weapon that was concealed inside his gym bag while searching for other items,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Although the facility was crowded with parents and children, no one was struck by the round, and no injuries were reported. Deputies assigned to provide security at the event responded immediately and took Davis into custody.”

Detectives have not revealed where the bullet came to a stop in the gym.

Carolina Courts is a privately owned sports complex described as “Charlotte’s premier basketball, volleyball and pickleball facility.” It has two locations in the region.

“Our mission is to provide a positive, inspiring, and safe environment to enhance the quality of life in all the communities we serve through fitness, competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and Christian values,” the gym’s website reports.
