Woman seeks help for grandkids after son killed by NC teen who also shot a cop
A woman is asking for community support for her grandchildren after police say her son was killed by a teenager later suspected of shooting a Monroe officer.
“We are heartbroken to share the devastating news of my son, Alvin James Parson Jr.,” Theresa McNeil wrote on the Go Fund Me she started for her grandchildren, ages 4, 3 and 2.
“Only 23 years old, he was tragically taken from us on Saturday, May 31, due to an act of senseless gun violence in Indian Trail,” McNeil wrote.
She described her son as “a loving father, a cherished friend and a vibrant young man who brought joy to everyone around him.”
Police haven’t said if they know what prompted the killing.
Union County deputies found Parson dead in a home after responding to a 911 call, Sheriff Eddie Cathey said in a May 31 statement.
Hours earlier, a teenager was suspected of shooting a Monroe police officer multiple times during a pursuit, officials said. Police killed the armed teenage suspect after “an extensive manhunt,” according to a police statement.
Cathey said the teen may have believed officers were after him in connection with the homicide, but the sheriff said police didn’t know about the killing at the time.
The officer who was shot was later released from a hospital.
McNeil said money raised through her Go Fund Me would help pay for her son’s funeral and “provide ongoing support for Alvin’s children, ensuring they have the necessary care and stability as they grow up without their father.”
Tina Sykes-Mosley is helping spread the word about the fundraiser.
She co-founded the nonprofit MARCUS organization that launched the first homicide victim support group in Union County.
“The funds raised through this campaign will help alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by the family,” Sykes-Mosley said in a statement.
Donations also will “ensure that the needs of these children are met as they navigate this heartbreaking loss,” she said.
