74-year-old man hit and killed on sidewalk when cars collide nearby, CMPD says
A 74-year-old man standing on the sidewalk was killed when a vehicle involved in a crash swerved off the road, according to Charlotte investigators.
The pedestrian has been identified as Ace Nathaniel Chambers and he died at the scene, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a July 6 news release.
It happened just before 1 a.m. Saturday, July 5, in the 4300 block of North Tryon Street, near East Sugar Creek Road.
“When officers arrived, they observed an unresponsive pedestrian ... and a 2007 Chrysler 300 with heavy damage occupied by a driver, Willie Sturdivant, 35 and two juvenile passengers,” CMPD said.
“Initial investigation indicates a collision involving two vehicles occurred ... that resulted in Mr. Chambers being struck by one of the vehicles while walking on a nearby sidewalk. ... The vehicle that caused the collision fled the scene.”
Investigators did not release details of which vehicle collided with Chambers.
Sturdivant was charged with driving while impaired, CMPD said.
“It is unknown if speed or impairment are factors for this collision for the vehicle that caused the collision,” CMPD said.
