Editor’s note: This story was updated on Dec. 12, 2025 with these new developments in the case:

The felony charge of indecent liberties with a student was dismissed on Nov. 25, 2025 with the prosecution saying it lacked sufficient evidence.

“There is no evidence to suggest that Defendant committed or attempted to commit a lewd and lascivious act with the victim or upon the victim’s body. The evidence tends to show that Defendant had excessive and inappropriate contact with the victim outside of the ordinary bounds of his role as an employee of the school, but this contact does not rise to the level of criminal conduct at this time.”

The second count, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was moved to district court and was pending as of Nov. 25.

Here’s the original news story published July 8, 2025:

A Providence Day School football coach admitted to buying alcohol for a female student, asking to see her topless, and nicknaming her after an adult sex worker, according to court records.

Damon Coiro, 45, admitted to the crimes in an interview with police, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police affidavit, and was arrested Monday on charges of indecent liberties with a student and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Coiro is no longer on the Providence Day website. The Charlotte Observer has reached out to a Providence Day spokesperson offering a chance to comment. A phone number listed for Coiro in public records was disconnected.

Providence Day School is a private college prep school on Sardis Road in south Charlotte. It teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Coiro’s LinkedIn says he began working at Providence Day in April 2020 as the assistant head football coach, director of sports performance, and offensive line coach.

The affidavit said a detective interviewed the student, identified only by initials, and learned she had been communicating with Coiro since late 2023. Coiro would make “sexually motivated” comments toward the student and ask about her relationships. He purchased alcohol for the student in May 2025 and asked to see her breasts in June, according to the allegations.

The detective interviewed Coiro on June 30 and he admitted to the accusations, the affidavit said.

He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon. He was being held Tuesday under a $75,000 secured bond, and was banned from Providence Day campus, court records said.
