Gastonia police officers shot and killed a man who they said opened fire on them Thursday night.

Patrol officers shot Jeremy Bonham, 39, while responding to an assault call at a Gastonia home at 10:32 p.m. on Hickory Hollow Road, according to authorities.

When officers arrived at the home, a male relative of Bonham was in the driveway and “indicated that the suspect was in the home, armed, and had fired off at least one shot,” a Gastonia Police Department news release said.

The news release said Bonham came from the rear of the home and began shooting at the officers with a rifle. Multiple Gastonia police officers returned fire, killing Bonham.

No officers were injured, according to the police department, and all officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
