A vehicle found burning in Mooresville had been set on fire to kill someone inside, according to police.

The fire was discovered Thursday, July 24, and the victim managed to escape, Mooresville police said in a news release.

“It was determined the vehicle was intentionally set on fire by Clayton Morrison Broyhill, 27, of Mooresville,” police said.

“A victim was inside the vehicle at the time the fire was set but was able to exit the vehicle without serious injury.”

Police issued a warrant for Broyhill’s arrest and he was located at a Mooresville home on Monday, July 28.

Broyhill initially refused to cooperate with officers, police said. However, a Crisis Negotiation Team was able to negotiate his surrender.

He was arrested and charged with: assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, burning personal property, communicating threats, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Investigators have not released a motive.

Mooresville is about a 30-mile drive north from Charlotte.
