A 39-year-old man accused of attacking a customer with a machete and brass knuckles at an uptown bar Saturday was quickly disarmed and tackled to the ground by other patrons, a police report said.

Matthew Terry King of Indian Trail faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, court records show.

King got into an argument with other patrons at a bar located at 300 South Brevard St. and was removed after it got physical. Witnesses said he returned later around 2 a.m. with an 18-inch machete and brass knuckles, appearing behind one of the patrons and saying “remember me,” according to a police report.

King tried to hit that customer in the head with brass knuckles, then attempted to do the same with the machete, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report said. The customer used his left hand to stop the blade and got a large cut. Another customer received a minor cut on his thigh when he helped tackle King to the ground.

King had blood on his clothes when police arrived, the police report said.

He is being held without bond at Mecklenburg County Jail.
