A four-year-old died after being shot during a car theft in south Charlotte, police said Wednesday morning.

Police later identified the child as Jayce Edwards, and said Thursday that four men had been charged with murder.

A suspect fired shots while stealing a black Dodge Charger from outside a townhome on Cigar Court, near the intersection of South Tryon Street and Carowinds Boulevard. The suspect “fired directly, intentionally” into the house, unprovoked and for unknown reasons, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Maj. Ryan Kennedy at the scene Wednesday morning.

At least one of those bullets struck the boy.

“This is absolutely tragic,” Kennedy said. “You’re talking about the death of a child who should be getting up and going to school right now... this is absolutely frustrating and infuriating.”

When a gun is fired, he said, “someone or something is going to stop those rounds, and when these rounds are negligently discharged like this... someone or something gets hit.”

Police on Thursday said three men had been arrested, interviewed and charged on Wednesday: Marquise Geurrier, 24; Angelo Hudson, 20; and Jordan Davis, 23. On Thursday, with assistance of Raleigh police, Anthony Abel, 18, was also charged with murder, CMPD said.

On Thursday, Kennedy said at a briefing that the community and officer who responded were deeply shaken by the tragedy of a 4-year-old killed over a car.

“This is an unimaginable loss for the family,” he said. He said investigators worked hard to try to bring resolution to the case.
